Walkability studies have provided evidence through statistical analysis that walking behavior is related to the condition of the built environment, as well as regarding the health benefits it may bring. Walkability research aims at identifying walkability factors of the environment, most often

Apr 29, 2016 Walk Score and Redfin ranked Boston the third most walkable city in the U.S., behind only New York and San Francisco.

A national walkability index (based on population density, road density, and access to commercial areas) was calculated. Compared with higher SES municipalities, relative rates for CVD mortality were significantly higher in medium SES municipalities (relative rate, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.02-1.07) and in lower SES municipalities (relative rate, 1.09; 95% CI, 1.07-1.12). The Walkability Index is based on data from the EPA's Smart Location Mapping project which includes a National Walkability Index for block groups. 1 The block group data from the EPA have been aggregated to provide a similar walkability index at the census-tract level. National Walkability Index data tables are available in both Excel and comma Walkability for Transport Index.

The NEWPATH project is one example of how these measures can be integrated into a single framework to build local evidence in support of walkable, healthy communities. Walkability is a customizable set of three walk rating indexes with an algorithm that considers factors including street type, intersection complexity, point-of-interest accessibility, population density, freeways and bodies of water. Add-on scores include other factors like crime, weather, or public transit, among others. The Walkability Index is a tool that allows existing places to be benchmarked and new proposals to be objectively tested in terms of whether they deliver car-dependence, with its associated problems – or walkability, with the social, economic and environmental benefits found in walkable places.

Walkability Index The Walkability Index dataset characterizes every Census 2010 block group in the U.S. based on its relative walkability. Walkability depends upon characteristics of the built environment that influence the likelihood of walking being used as a mode of travel.

The Walkability Index is based on the EPA's previous data product, the Smart Location Database (SLD). Block group data from the SLD was the only input into the Walkability Index, and consisted of four variables from the SLD weighted in a formula to create the new Walkability Index.

AURIN's open‐source Walkability Index Tool is a first step in demonstrating the potential benefit of a tool that could measure walkability across Australia. It also demonstrates the value of making accurate spatial data available for research purposes. Walkability Index measures developed by the lab can be combined with other data to model built environment influences on travel, physical activity, diet, and greenhouse gas emissions.

WALKABILITY MODELS What they are Walkability models1 predict how easy it is for people to reach the places they want to walk to. It should be noted that ‘walkability’ does not measure how pleasant it is to walk these routes, but it is a good indicator of the potential for people to make these journeys on foot.
